Macoto Cobras

Great Snakes!
Macoto, a Taiwanese Bank, was sponsor of the Gida baseball team, named after the Taiwanese aboriginal word for 'sun'. When Gida joined the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 2003, Macoto wished to undertake a complete overhaul of the team identity, with a new name, logo and uniform. The management wanted a classic look as professional as anything in the Japanese or American Leagues.

Creative Response
A survey of sports team names in Japan and North America was carried out to see what kind of names had enduring appeal to sports fans. Bravis concluded that the name had to be vigorous, aggressive and short (so that Taiwanese could easily understand it); it also had to lend itself to the creation of a mascot character to maximize merchandising opportunities. 'Cobras' fulfilled all the above criteria, while the new logo cleverly incorporated the jaws and tail of a cobra in its first and final letters.

The new uniform, in black, silver and orange, gave the team an authoritative and professional look very distinct from any other in Taiwan. Bravis went on to develop design applications including the team bus, cheerleader uniforms, T-shirts for fans and a special Macoto Bank credit card. The new identity of the Macoto Cobras was unveiled at a press conference on 20 February, 2004. The reception in the sports press and among the fans was uniformly favorable.
